The Piazza dei Miracoli (Field of Miracles), located in Pisa, Tuscany, Italy, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is home to some of the greatest structures of medieval art and architecture. The actual term Piazza de Miracoli refers to the cathedral, baptistery, graveyard and bell tower that sit on the land, and each are visited by millions of tourists each year.

Construction began with the Duomo of Santa Maria Assunta in 1063 and was meant to celebrate and display Pisa’s prominence and wealth as a marine power. It was consecrated in 1118, though incomplete, by Pope Gelasio II. The other structures followed suit, and the whole square was declared a world heritage site in 1987. All the structures in the square exemplify Romanesque architecture and remain some of the most prominent examples of medieval art and engineering in Europe. The Cathedral is still in use today and holds regular masses.
